Rain is one of the biggest threats to your home, but with our super hydrophobic technology, it doesn’t have to be.
Our formulation causes rain to form beads that rolls off the surface. This is what’s known as a super hydrophobic surface, a scientific standard for extreme water repellency, where water has minimal contact with the wall and cannot absorb.
With a contact angle greater than 150°, water forms a near-perfect bead so it simply rolls away instead of soaking into your home.

Not your standard paint
Even when described as ‘weatherproof’ or ‘water resistant’, most standard masonry paints and coatings absorb water over time.
Once the rain hits the surface it sticks to the wall and eventually works its way into your home.
Our formulation prevents this by repelling rain before it has a chance to absorb into your walls.
How it works
It’s all made possible thanks to our nano-technology. Under a microscope, the paint is made up of millions of tiny structures that are invisible to the naked eye, leaving a normal, smooth finish.

Are other paints waterproof?
We are extremely proud to be pioneering super hydrophobic technology in the UK. The reality is, standard masonry paints and other exterior products generally are not waterproof and will allow moisture to absorb over-time. To be completely waterproof, a product must be repel water like our Emperor super hydrophobic technology.
What makes a surface super hydrophobic?
A super hydrophobic surface causes water to completely repel from the surface, leaving it to create a perfectly spherical bead of water. To be classed as super hydrophobic, the contact angle of the bead of water must be higher than 160° or in other words, the bead of water must be circular. If you drop water on to a non-super hydrophobic surface such as a bare brick or a wall painted with standard masonry paint, the bead of water will not repel and will begin to soak into the surface.

How have Emperor Paint products been tested?
The Emperor range of products have been independently tested by an independent UKAS accredited laboratory in a series of tests. Part of these tests included a water absorption test in order to establish how Emperor Paint products perform when subject to harsh weathering. The results found that Emperor Paint products reduce water absorption by 96% and pass the BS EN ISO 12572 (water vapour resistance) Quality Standard.
What products do Emperor Paint offer?
We offer a range of products that all contain our Emperor super hydrophobic technology. We offer two products for exterior walls; Emperor Masonry Paint and Emperor Masonry Creme, as well as Emperor Wood Waterproofer, which is designed to protect wooden fencing, decking and cladding from weathering.
What is the difference between Emperor Masonry Paint and Emperor Masonry Creme?
While Emperor Masonry Paint and Emperor Masonry Creme contain the same technology and are both designed for use on masonry, there are a number of differences. Emperor Masonry Paint is a coloured paint that can be applied to both previously painted and bare, non-painted exterior walls, while Emperor Masonry Creme is an invisible treatment that is only suitable for bare, unpainted exterior walls.
Can anyone apply Emperor Paint products?
Emperor Paint products are easy to apply using a brush, roller or airless spray machine. Specific details about how to prepare the surface and how best to apply the products can be found on our handy how to apply guides or on each product data sheet.
Do Emperor Paint products seal?
Emperor Paint products are highly breathable, ensuring that while moisture cannot enter the surface due to our super hydrophobic technology, moisture from inside the surface can naturally breathe out in order to keep your home dry.
How long do Emperor Paint products last?
Our Emperor Masonry Paint and Emperor Masonry Creme have been independently tested and certified to withstand harsh weather conditions for a minimum of 25 years without peeling, flaking or failing. That is why we offer a lifetime guarantee on both products, as they will far exceed this 25 year proven performance and never peel, flake or blister.
