Doing our bit

Sustainability

We see sustainability as part of how a modern paint should perform. For us, it starts with products that use fewer resources over time and improve the energy efficiency of homes across the UK, along with better choices across everything we do.

Designed for tomorrow

The UK is getting wetter, and that is changing how our homes perform. When walls hold water they lose heat faster and become harder to heat. Our formulation by keeping walls dry has been shown in independent tests to keep walls 6°C warmer on average than untreated walls. It’s the same principle that keeps an emperor penguin warm in harsh conditions, which is why it inspired our name and our technology.

For your home it means less heat loss, lower energy use and fewer carbon emissions, which can make a real difference to comfort and the cost of keeping your home warm. As the weather continues to put pressure on our homes, keeping walls dry isn’t a small detail, it’s part of keeping your home prepared for the future. It’s an overlooked part of sustainability, but one that makes a real difference every day.

Sustainability that sticks

Most conversations about sustainability start with packaging and ingredients, but that’s just one part of the story. We think there is something just as important that is overlooked, and that’s long-term performance of a paint.

Some standard masonry paints can need reapplying in under 5 years. Our paint is independently tested to withstand even harsh weather conditions for at least 25 years and is likely to perform past this. That removes four repainting cycles and the materials, transport, packaging and waste tied to them.

When something lasts, everything else reduces, including waste and the weekends you’d lose to repainting.

Better transparency

We are proud to Declare

We are proud to declare every ingredient we use in our paint. The Declare independent review process found that our paint is LBC Red List Approved and has been shown to meet the requirements of the Living Building Challenge Red List. With transparency at the core of who we are, we are proud to be the first UK paint company to join the Declare program.

Better choices

We’re working on it

We’ve worked hard to make better choices across our operations. Some changes are small, some changes are big, but together they are positive steps that support a more responsible way of doing things without compromising quality.

  • 100% recycled, recyclable, biodegradable and compostable packaging inserts
  • 70% of our boxes are made from recycled materials
  • FSC-accredited packaging supplier
  • Boxes are sourced 11 miles from our site to cut unnecessary transport
  • Low VOC, water-based formulation
  • Offer a range of eco-friendly tools

We know there is much more we can do, but as an independent paint brand we’re improving the choices we make as we grow, looking at better materials, better packaging and better ways of working.
