IMPROVES ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Saving on a rainy day
Emperor masonry products aren’t just your standard paints and coatings. Our highly advanced technology has been shown to reduce heat loss and improve the energy efficiency of your home.
The problem
You may not be aware but the exterior walls of your home can uptake water as the vast majority of exterior walled surfaces are porous. The problem is, damp content of 5% can lower the insulating properties of a surface by 50%. This means that when the exterior walls of our homes become saturated with water, they can lead to an increase in heat loss.
The solution
Our Emperor super hydrophobic technology reduces this water absorption, while high breathability ensures no moisture can build-up within the wall. The result is, Emperor Masonry Paint and Emperor Masonry Creme both improve the thermal performance of exterior walls and can ultimately save you money by reducing the amount of heat your home loses as a result of wet exterior walls. This also helps to reduce the carbon footprint of your home, by preventing unnecessary energy waste.
How do we know this?
It is all well and good saying that our masonry products are heat retaining, but we wanted to be able to prove this with cold hard facts. That is why we took our masonry products to a UKAS accredited laboratory for independent testing. The results found that brick walls treated with Emperor Masonry Paint and Emperor Masonry Creme were found to be up to 6°C warmer on average compared to an untreated brick wall.
Frequently Asked Questions
How has the heat retaining properties of Emperor Paint masonry products been tested?
We took our products to a UKAS accredited laboratory to test all aspects of Emperor Paint masonry products, including water resistance, durability, heat retention and breathability. To determine the heat retention of Emperor Paint products samples coated with each of our products were compared against untreated samples.
The results found that after being subject to accelerated weathering, the samples treated with Emperor Masonry Paint and Emperor Masonry Creme were on average 6°C warmer than the untreated samples. This meant that the products passed the EAD 040083-00-0404 (external thermal insulation composite) Quality Standard, which is the same given to external wall insulation.
Will this save me money?
If the exterior walls of your home are absorbing moisture, this will contribute to higher levels of heat loss which ultimately means that your energy bills will be higher. By applying Emperor Masonry Paint or Emperor Masonry Creme, you reduce the chance of this moisture absorbing into your walls, making them more energy efficient and preventing unnecessary heat loss. The saving you can make varies depending on the amount of moisture, the type of construction and a number of other factors.
Which Emperor Paint products are heat retaining?
Both Emperor Masorny Paint and Emperor Masonry Creme contibute to higher levels of energy efficiency as these are designed to keep exterior walls dry.
Will this make my home warmer in summer?
No, our masonry products only help retain heat by keeping exterior walls dry and thus reducing the rate of heat loss. This will not trap heat in the summer months.
Are Emperor Paint products as effective as external wall insulation?
Emperor Masonry Paint and Emperor Masonry Creme have been tested to the same level as any external wall insulation must be tested to, in order to prove it is an external insulating system (EAD 040083-00-0404 – External thermal insulation composite).
All properties can experience benefits in thermal performance, the level of which depends on the property. Our masonry products are highly recommended for use on properties with cavity wall insulation in order to ensure the insulation stays dry and thus can perform at its best.
Does this benefit properties with a cavity wall construction or solid wall construction?
The amount of money you can save depends on the type of construction you have. There are two broad forms of construction; solid walls, which as the name would suggest, consist of one singular wall all the way through, and cavity walls, consisting of two layers of wall that have a ‘cavity’ or ‘gap’ in the middle.
With solid walls, there is nothing preventing moisture from transferring from the external wall into the internal wall. This can allow them to become highly saturated and particularly prone to heat loss and poor energy efficiency. Properties with cavity walls prevent this bridge of moisture, allowing them to release water more effectively, although they can still suffer from heat loss due to saturated exterior walls.
Cavity walls that have been installed with poorly fitted cavity wall insulation can also be prone to heat loss, as this insulation can absorb moisture like a sponge, causing it to lose thermal performance.
