Being confident on what process you need to undertake before starting a DIY project is crucial for anyone. Our team of experts have put together this handy guide so you can find all the information you need on how to apply Emperor Wood Waterproofer all in one place.
Before starting make sure that the temperature is above 5°C for the full application and drying process. In the same vein, make sure that there is also no risk of rainfall.
Wondering where to start? Before doing anything, make sure to thoroughly clean the wood. This is as important for the performance as it is for the appearance. Start by washing the timber either with a hosepipe or a stiff brush and hot water. Once this has been done, apply Emperor Exterior Cleaner to areas where organic growth such as moss, lichens and mildew have developed. This can be done using a brush, roller or pump-sprayer, depending on what is easiest for you. Allow this to dry for 2-3 hours at 20°C and then wash off using water, to remove any residue.

2. Prepare
As Emperor Wood Waterproofer is an invisible treatment, preparing the wood as best as possible is crucial to ensure you are maintaining the natural beauty of the wood while its looking its best. Lightly sand down any areas of the timber to remove any deep, ingrained dirt and discolouration that cleaning alone couldn't remove. Check the surface is sound and remove any timber that is rotting. These areas along with and cracks or holes can all be repaired at this point to help keep out moisture and ensure the wood has best possible finish. It is also important to remove any previous paint, stain or oil that will prevent the product from absorbing into the wood.

3. Apply
Now the preparation is done, applying Emperor Wood Waterproofer couldn't be easier. It comes in a thin, liquid form meaning it can be applied onto timber quick and easy. You can apply it using a brush, roller or a pump-spray machine. Simply apply one-coat of Emperor Wood Waterproofer at 5m2 per litre to the wood. Take care to stick closely to this coverage rate, as this ensures it will perform at its best.

4. Allow to cure
Once applied, it is time to sit and wait for the treatment to absorb into the wood and cure. It can take 1-2 hours depending on temperatures for the product to fully dry and for the nano-technology to chemically bond to the material. After this period, it will be fully protected, however it could take up to 24 hours for the super hydrophobic technology to begin to cause water to form beads on the surface.

Emperor Wood Waterproofer will be dry after approximately 1-2 hours, in which time it will be showerproof and fully waterproof. The full beading effect of the super hydrophobic technology may take up to 24 hours after application, while it cures into the wood, so do not panic if you don't see it bead water straight away.
Yes, Emperor Wood Waterproofer is designed for bare, natural wood. Not only can paints and other treatments prevent the treatment absorbing into the wood, but an oil or other treatment could negatively react with the Emperor Wood Waterproofer.
In short, it depends. If there is any signs of organic growth such as mildew, algae and lichens then yes, you do need to apply Emperor Exterior Cleaner to be covered by our 10 year guarantee. If you do not apply the cleaner, this organic growth could continue to bloom and over-time cause problems. The reality is, some organic growth is not visible, which is why we recommend that everyone applies Emperor Exterior Cleaner before application, just to be safe. After all, it is better to be safe than sorry.
Coverage rate is very important for any wood treatment. Emperor Wood Waterproofer has a coverage rate of 5m2 per litre, which allows the perfect amount of our innovative formulation to enter the wood and chemically bond to the surface. If you don't apply enough, it won't have enough of the waterproofer in the wood to fully do its job. If you apply too much, it won't all absorb into the wood.
With a coverage of 5m2 just one-coat required, a 5L of Emperor Wood Waterproofer will cover roughly 25m2. This coverage can vary lightly in some cases due to the porosity of the wood.
For Emperor Wood Waterproofer to do its job, it needs to be applied to a sound surface. While it will help to reduce the risk of rotting, it can't fix rot that has already occurred. Remove the rotting wood from the surface as this will simply fail eventually anyway. You can repair these areas using an exterior wood filler system of your choice, which will help to restore the wood back to its former glory. You can then apply Emperor Wood Waterproofer to the full surface once the filler is dry.
